Sliding barn doors got their name from their use in agriculture. They were installed directly in barns to quickly and easily isolate different parts of the room. Their design allowed for easy opening and closing, gaining access to another chamber, which was especially important in farm labor.

Barn doors became popular among homeowners in the early 20th century, which is why they are often found in modern interiors. Barn doors differ from traditional swing doors in that they are mounted on a top rail that the slab moves on.

How to measure barn doors?

As mentioned above, proper measurements are one of the most important steps before buying a door, so we've prepared step-by-step instructions on how to determine the dimensions of a sliding barn door.

The tools you need

Most likely, you have everything you need for the measurements in your home:

  • Tape measure.

  • Paper.

  • Pen or pencil.

The most visual and convenient way to record the measurement results is to draw a model of the door and plot the data obtained on it.

Explore the doorway

Make sure that the space above the doorway where the barn track will potentially be attached is capable of holding the entire structure (some slabs weigh up to 200 pounds). Typically, a clearance of at least 6 inches is required.

Next, ensure there is enough room on the left and right to open and close both single and double doors. Sockets, switches, etc., should not interfere with the slab's operation.

Door width measurement

Here, you will need to take three measurements and then, if they are different from each other, write down the largest one on paper:

  • Place a tape measure on top of the door opening and measure the width from the left edge to the right edge.

  • Repeat the action in the middle of the doorway.

  • Repeat at the bottom.

Be careful because the width of the opening determines the size of the barn track.

Add 4-6 inches to the largest measurement obtained, because the door must extend 2-3 inches beyond the opening on each side. Accordingly, to determine the track size, multiply this value by two.

Door height measurement

This step also requires three measurements for accuracy and recording the highest value as the base one:

  • Place a tape measure on the header on the left side of the opening and measure the height to the floor.

  • Repeat the action in the middle of the doorway.

  • Repeat on the right side.

The barn track will be installed a few (4-6) inches above the opening, so you will need to factor that in. In addition, the door should be ½ to 1 inch above the floor to ensure smooth operation and maintain the integrity of the flooring.
