Barn doors are an excellent alternative to standard configurations. They look unusual, so they will be an accent in a room that does not need good soundproofing, such as a hallway or closet.
Almost every homeowner will confirm that installing a door unit on your own requires a lot of resources, including time and repair skills. In addition, barn doors are heavy in most cases to install alone, so you will need an assistant.
If you're sure you're ready to get started, check out our article to avoid mistakes. We've prepared step-by-step instructions on how to install a barn interior door correctly. It will take approximately 2-3 hours.
Unpacking and preparing tools
The Belldinni barn door kit consists of the following:
-
Barn track.
-
Barn rollers.
-
Stoppers.
-
Door slab guide.
-
Fasteners.
-
Screws.
Please note that after the door has been delivered to you, it must adapt to the new temperature and humidity conditions. Thus, remove it from the packaging and leave it in your home for 1-2 days.
Prepare the following tools to secure the track and rollers and install the door slab:
-
Drill or screwdriver with bits.
-
Level.
-
Self-tapping screws.
-
Fixing nails.
-
Allen wrench.
-
Pencil.
Door slab size determination
The door slab requires two extra inches of height and width compared with the finished opening of the doorway. Ensure a perfectly level floor throughout the door movement. The floor level influences the gap between the door slab and the floor.
Example:
If the doorway dimensions are 30×82", then 32×84" is the optimal slab size.
Also, make sure there is clearance on both sides of the door so the slab can open freely. And consider the location of the switches.
Barn track mounting
The barn track mounting level should be calculated from the slab size plus the floor gap (which could be up to ⅓ inches) plus the roller height from the edge of the roller leg to the roller working surface.
Make a marking over the doorway beforehand to understand exactly where the track will be attached. Once the drilling locations are marked, drill each hole.
The track should be mounted while leveling. It is crucial.
Since Belldinni doors can be hefty because of the construction of the door, make sure the barn track is secured with the included screws to a concealed 2×4 or concrete (for concrete, please, buy different fasteners, not included). Screws should differ depending on the wall material: wood or concrete. An Allen wrench is also to be used for track mounting.
We recommend installing the barn track according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Rollers mounting
The rollers allow the slab to slide along the track; they're mounted on top of it.
The indent from the door slab edge will further influence the stopper mounting, ensuring that the opening is fully closed with the door slab.
Predrill holes before securing with screws to avoid door slab damage.
For cage nut mounting and further roller mounting, please use an Allen wrench (key).
Door slab mounting and stopper installation
All you need to do is hang the door slab on a barn track, around the edges of which it is essential to install stoppers. Lift the door and place the rollers on the metal guide rail. As mentioned earlier, the heavy slab's weight makes it safer and easier to do this with two people.
If anti-jump disks are included, attach them to the top edge of the door. These little rubber things can hold the leaf in place if the rollers suddenly slip off the barn track.
Next, install door guides on the floor to keep the door from wobbling when opening and closing (sometimes, they are inserted into a slot at the bottom of the slab). A door slab guide should also be installed to save the square angle between the slab and the floor.
You are almost there! Before congratulating you on your barn door installation, ensure that it opens and closes smoothly and that all the elements are firmly in place.
Flush pull installation
Attach this piece of hardware to the slab by pressing it down slightly.
Whether you use a pre-made kit or buy the hardware and door separately, it is best to attach it before the door is installed. Sometimes, this step is too easy, as shown in our video instructions, so you can secure the flush pull at the end.
Please note: do not put glue on the edges of the pulls. Glue can be applied on the rounded internal surface.
We offer a wide range of flush pulls for sliding doors, including solid brass ones. They are available in various colors (black, satin nickel, and satin brass) and have a curved recess serving as a finger grip.
How do you maintain a barn door?
Like many Belldinni interior doors, barn doors don't require much maintenance. However, there are a few tips:
-
Depending on the type of finish, use the appropriate products.
-
Doors coated with enamel, polypropylene, or veneer can be cleaned with a damp cloth without aggressive detergents. A soap solution is allowed.
-
If the door is decorated with a glass insert, clean it with a glass cleaner so no streaks remain.
-
Do not use brushes and stiff rags, which can ruin the door by leaving scratches.
-
Wipe the hardware (handle, track, and rollers) regularly with a soft cloth.
